TANZANIAN GOVERNMENT TO SET TARGETS FOR COMMNUCATION OFFICERS

By Staff Writer-MAELEZO

In a bid to improve flow of information from the government to the public, the Tanzanian government will, from now, set targets to all government communication officers which will be used as a yardstick in appraising their performance.

The decision was made at the end of the five-day working meeting of government communication officers held at Treasury hall in Dodoma.

The meeting which was attended by more than 200 government communication officers from government ministries, Parastatals, Regions and Municipals agreed that in order to improve government communication, setting targets to communication officers was paramount.

According to Media Service Act of 2016, to inform the public of the implementation of government plans and programs is mandatory not a choice.

Setting targets to communication officers would also set forth the implementation of President John Pombe Magufuli’s philosophy which calls for getting rid of ‘business as usual’ attitude towards work as well as directive of the Minister of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports Nape Nnauye who advocated for hard work with determination.

Meanwhile, Principal Secretary Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports Professor Elisante Ole Gabriel, has urged government officials to work closely with government communication officers in order to be able to reach the set goals.

Closing the meeting, Prof Elisante emphasized that “with a new system of frequent evaluation of government communication work, government communication officers must be supported by all public servants”
